Gardening experts have revealed their top tips for growing vegetables in small spaces, as more people seek to become self-sufficient amid food shortages in several countries due to the Corona crisis.

“You can make the most of every space in your home – no matter how small – from windowsills to small balconies, patios, and even the pots on your front door,” gardening expert Louise Golden told the Daily Mail.

You can grow: spinach, peppers, radishes, garlic, and small greens, and if the spot is sunny, tomatoes can be grown in a window box, especially small cherry tomatoes.

If the rim is deep enough, spinach can grow well even with only a few hours of sunlight, and it is advisable to choose pots that are at least six inches deep, and give each spinach plant enough space for its large leaves.

Yard

Experts say carrots and beets can be grown in the backyard, and vertical gardening is ideal for backyard gardens and can be achieved through a wall system for growing herbs.

Balconies

Although balconies are usually narrow, they provide ample space for growing fresh produce. You don’t need a lot of space at all to grow tomatoes and garden herbs, which can be grown in suitable containers and pots.

Before deciding what to grow, it’s a good idea to check how much sun your balcony gets. You’ll need at least five to six hours of full sun per day to grow the widest variety of vegetables.

Balconies can be used to grow a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, spinach, carrots, and many other types that don’t require a lot of space.
